“More Than Just A Game”
For some athletes, football is simply a sport. For others, it becomes a lifelong journey shaped by family, discipline, adversity, sacrifice, and determination.
For Lee Academy senior running back Desi Monix II, football has been a part of his life for nearly as long as he can remember.
From watching relatives compete on the football field to learning the fundamentals as a six-year-old Little League player, Monix has spent years developing not only his athletic abilities but also the mindset that continues to guide him today.
That mindset can be summarized in two words:
“Finishing strong!”
For Monix, those words represent something much deeper than the final minutes of a football game.
“Once you start something, you always have to finish it,” Monix explained during an exclusive interview with ICSL Sports / ISN Media. “I’ve been telling myself for a long time. When things get difficult and tough in life or even in a football game, that saying lets me know to never quit or give up.”
Now, as he approaches the conclusion of his high school football career, Monix is carrying that philosophy into his senior season at Lee Academy in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
After helping the Colts reach a state championship game during his junior year, Monix has his sights set on another championship opportunity — and an ending that could become a defining chapter in his school’s football history.
Where the Journey Began: Family, Football, and Inspiration
Monix’s love for football began around the age of five or six. Before he ever stepped onto a football field as a player, he was watching relatives compete and imagining himself following in their footsteps. Among those who inspired him was Houston Skipper, whom Monix remembered watching play at Clarksdale High School. He also recalled watching relatives Cameron Monix and Dedrick Gates compete at Lee Academy. Seeing family members play the game helped spark a passion that would eventually become a major part of his identity. “Watching my cousins and watching them play the game of football inspired me to become one myself,” Monix said. At approximately six years old, he began playing Little League football with the Wildcats.
It was there that he received his first introduction to organized football, teamwork, and the importance of preparation. Monix remembered Coach Tyrone as one of his earliest influences. According to Monix, his coach consistently emphasized fundamentals, discipline, and hard work. Those early lessons became the foundation for everything that followed. Football was no longer just something Monix enjoyed watching. It was becoming something he wanted to dedicate himself to.
The Early Years: Learning Through Wins and Losses
From approximately ages six through nine, Monix continued developing his skills through Little League football before progressing into Pee Wee competition. Those years taught him that success did not come without challenges.
Monix recalled that around age nine, his team suffered just one loss during the season. At age ten, the team experienced two losses. Although the setbacks were disappointing, they helped teach him how to respond when things did not go as planned. By age eleven, the lessons began paying off. Monix recalled his team completing an undefeated season. For a young player still learning the game, the accomplishment represented more than simply winning every contest. It reflected the importance of preparation, teamwork, and the fundamentals that had been emphasized since his earliest football experiences.
Looking back, Monix credited the ups and downs of those seasons with helping him become a better player. He was beginning to understand a lesson that would follow him throughout his career: adversity could either discourage him or motivate him to improve. He chose to improve.
The Transition to Junior High: Building Mental Toughness
As Monix grew older, the competition became more demanding. Moving from Pee Wee football into junior high presented an unfamiliar challenge. Monix recalled feeling nervous about competing against bigger, stronger, and more experienced players. However, the foundation he developed during his Little League years helped him adjust. During his seventh-grade season, Monix recalled his team finishing with a 5–3 record. The following year, the team improved to 6–2. Although those seasons included difficult competition and disappointing losses, they also helped him develop confidence.
One of the biggest obstacles Monix faced throughout his football career was learning not to be intimidated by the size of his opponents. “When I started playing football, I was never the biggest guy on the field,” he explained. “Seeing bigger players kind of intimidated me.” Over time, he began to understand that size alone did not determine a player’s ability.
“I overcame that by seeing I wasn’t the biggest, but I learned I could be one of the best.” That realization became a turning point in his development. Monix was learning to trust his preparation, believe in his abilities, and approach stronger competition with confidence.
Earning His Opportunity: From Junior Varsity to Varsity
By ninth grade, Monix was competing at the junior varsity level. He recalled winning eight games before receiving an opportunity to move up to varsity football. For an athlete who had spent years progressing through youth football, the promotion represented another important milestone. Monix was excited about the challenge. He wanted to see how his game would measure up against older and more experienced competition. The opportunity also brought new expectations.
Varsity football required greater physical toughness, faster decision-making, and the ability to perform under pressure. But Monix welcomed the challenge. His journey had taught him that growth often required stepping outside his comfort zone.
Sophomore Adversity: A Season That Changed His Mindset
Monix’s sophomore season was not the experience he or his teammates had hoped for. According to his recollection, Lee Academy finished with a 5–7 record and suffered a first-round playoff loss. The disappointing season left a lasting impression. After experiencing success at earlier levels, Monix was confronted with the frustration of a difficult varsity season. The losses hurt. But instead of allowing the disappointment to weaken his confidence, Monix used it as motivation.
He recalled returning to training that summer with a determination to work ten times harder. The goal was not simply to improve his own statistics. He wanted to help his teammates become better and put Lee Academy in a position to compete for something greater. The following season would show just how much that disappointment had motivated the Colts.
The Junior - Year Breakthrough: A Championship Run
In 2025, Lee Academy took a significant step forward. According to Monix’s account, the Colts finished 8–4 and advanced to the state championship game. For Monix, the journey to the championship represented years of hard work and a major turnaround from the disappointment of his sophomore season. He credited the team’s offensive linemen, receivers, and coaching staff for their contributions. Everyone had a role.
The offensive line created opportunities. The receivers contributed to the team’s success. The coaches helped prepare the players. Most importantly, the team was working together. The Colts eventually faced Centreville Academy in the state championship game. Although Lee Academy fell short of winning the title, Monix viewed the experience as one of the most meaningful moments of his football career.
When asked about the biggest challenge he had faced, Monix pointed directly to that championship opportunity. “Playing for a state championship after 55 years! My 11th-grade year I had a chance to change that,” he said. “After 55 years, we finally went to a state championship game! The outcome wasn’t what I wanted, but that just made me and my team work even harder!”
The championship appearance represented an important accomplishment for the program. But for Monix, reaching the championship game was not enough. The loss gave him another reason to return to the weight room, continue training, and prepare for his senior season. He had already experienced the disappointment of coming close. Now he wanted another opportunity to finish the job.
A Senior Season to Remember
Entering his senior season in 2026, Monix carried the lessons of his entire football journey with him.
The undefeated youth football season.
The nervous transition to junior high.
The disappointment of his sophomore year.
The excitement of reaching the state championship as a junior.
And the determination to return stronger.
Each experience had helped shape the athlete he was becoming.
During his senior campaign, Monix continued producing impressive numbers for Lee Academy.
Previously reviewed MaxPreps statistics listed him with 1,637 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns on 139 carries across nine recorded games, averaging approximately 11.8 yards per carry.
Those figures placed him among the highly productive running backs covered by ICSL Sports / ISN Media during the 2026 season. But one performance stood out to Monix more than the others. When asked to identify his best game of the season, he immediately pointed to Indianola Academy.
“My best performance was against Indianola Academy! I had 306 rushing yards with only 10 carries!” Monix said. Despite the remarkable individual numbers he reported, Monix was quick to acknowledge the people around him. “With that, I give thanks to my teammates!” That response reflected a recurring theme throughout his interview. Even when discussing his biggest individual accomplishments, Monix continued recognizing the contributions of his teammates.
Editor’s note: The 306-yard, 10-carry performance against Indianola Academy is based on Monix’s interview and remains subject to independent statistical confirmation.
What Separates Desi Monix II From Other Running Backs?
Mississippi has produced talented running backs across multiple generations. For Monix, however, the qualities that separate him from other players are not limited to speed, strength, or athletic ability. He believes his greatest advantage is his mindset.
“My determination!” Monix said when asked what separates him from other running backs in Mississippi. “I believe no one can match my determination and my toughness.” For Monix, that determination becomes especially important when the game is on the line. He understands that being a running back comes with responsibility. When his teammates and coaches turn to him in a critical moment, he sees it as a sign of trust.
“When they count on me to make a big play for my team, I know they believe in me to do whatever we need to get done!” That trust is something Monix takes seriously. He wants his teammates to know that when the moment becomes difficult, he will continue competing. His confidence is not simply about believing he can make a big play. It is about believing that he and his teammates can accomplish something together.
The Influence of Family and the Power of Encouragement
Throughout his football journey, Monix has also relied on encouragement from the people closest to him. When asked about the best advice he had received from his parents or loved ones, his answer centered on believing in himself and refusing to quit. He explained that his family consistently reminds him that he can accomplish anything he puts his mind to. Their message is to keep pushing forward and always give his maximum effort. That encouragement has helped reinforce the mindset he developed during his earliest football experiences.
The lessons from Coach Tyrone, the inspiration he received from watching relatives compete, and the support of his family have all contributed to his growth. For Monix, determination is not simply something he demonstrates during football games. It is a principle he tries to carry into everyday life.
The Person Behind the Football Player
Statistics can reveal how productive an athlete has been. Game film can show speed, vision, toughness, and the ability to make defenders miss. But Monix believes there is something about him that cannot be fully understood by watching highlights. His competitive spirit. When asked what college coaches and recruiters might not know about him, Monix again emphasized his determination. “How much determined I am! I’m a very competitive guy and love competition!” he explained. He also made it clear that his teammates share that mentality.
“Me and my teammates are a very determined team.” For Monix, competition is not something to avoid. It is something to embrace. Whether he is facing a stronger opponent, recovering from a difficult loss, or preparing for a championship opportunity, he believes challenges are necessary for growth. That attitude has followed him from his earliest football experiences to his final season at Lee Academy.
Dreams Beyond High School
As Monix prepares for life after high school, his ambitions extend well beyond Lee Academy. Like many young athletes, he dreams of playing football at the highest level. His ultimate goal is to reach the National Football League.
“After high school I hope to go big and go to the NFL!” Monix said. Growing up, he also followed several major college football programs. Among his favorites were the Oregon Ducks, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Ole Miss Rebels. “Growing up I always watched the Oregon Ducks, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Ole Miss! Those teams I really wanted to play for!” Those programs represent the level of football Monix has long dreamed of experiencing.
His aspirations are ambitious, but his message throughout the interview remained consistent. He believes athletes must be willing to work for the opportunities they want. For Monix, the journey does not end when high school football is over. It is another step toward the future he hopes to build.
A Message to the Next Generation
Monix understands that younger athletes across Mississippi are working toward the same dreams he once had. Some are just beginning Little League football. Others are entering junior high, preparing for varsity competition, or hoping to attract attention from college programs.
When asked what advice he would give those young athletes, Monix delivered a message rooted in the same determination that has guided his career. “Never give up! If you want to go pro, get up and go take it!” His message was about remaining focused, believing in yourself, and pursuing opportunities rather than waiting for success to happen.
It is the same mindset that helped him overcome his early intimidation of bigger players and respond to difficult seasons. Monix wants younger athletes to understand that their circumstances do not have to determine their future. They must believe in themselves and be willing to work.
How He Wants Lee Academy to Remember Him
As Monix approaches the final chapter of his high school football career, he has thought about the legacy he hopes to leave behind. He wants to be remembered for more than rushing yards and touchdowns. He wants his teammates, coaches, and younger players to remember his character.
When asked how he wanted the Lee Academy community to remember him, Monix described someone who was respected, admired, and determined to complete his mission. He hopes to be remembered as a player whom people loved and younger athletes looked up to. He also wants to be remembered as someone who refused to quit before finishing what he started. That perspective reveals something important about his journey.
While individual recognition matters, Monix understands that the way an athlete treats others and responds to adversity can leave an impression long after the final game. His goal is to leave Lee Academy knowing he gave everything he had.
Chasing History: One More Opportunity
For Lee Academy, the 2026 season carries significant expectations. After reaching the championship game during Monix’s junior season, the Colts entered his senior year hoping to take the next step. Monix has described the program’s championship pursuit in the context of a drought stretching approximately 55 years. That historical timeline still requires confirmation, but the importance of the opportunity is clear. He wants to help bring a championship to Lee Academy.
For Monix, winning would represent more than a trophy. It would be the culmination of years of preparation, difficult losses, hard work, and lessons learned along the way. It would also be a moment shared with the teammates, coaches, family members, and community members who helped make the journey possible. And perhaps most importantly, it would give Monix an opportunity to complete the mission he has carried with him throughout his senior season.
Finishing Strong
Every football journey begins somewhere. For Desi Monix II, it began as a young boy watching family members play football and dreaming of one day stepping onto the field himself. It continued with the Wildcats, where Coach Tyrone taught him the fundamentals and the value of hard work. It developed through Pee Wee football, an undefeated youth season, the nervous transition into junior high, and the excitement of earning a varsity opportunity. It was tested during a difficult sophomore season and strengthened by a junior-year championship run that ended in disappointment.
Now, as a senior at Lee Academy, Monix is determined to make the most of the opportunity in front of him. He has already demonstrated that his journey is about more than football statistics. It is about resilience. It is about family. It is about believing in yourself even when others are bigger, stronger, or more experienced. It is about trusting teammates, learning from losses, and continuing to pursue a goal when the road becomes difficult. And through every stage of that journey, one message has remained constant.
“Finishing strong!”
Those words are more than a slogan for Desi Monix II. They are the philosophy that has helped shape his life. His final high school chapter is still being written, and the ultimate outcome remains uncertain. But regardless of what comes next, Monix hopes to leave behind a legacy of determination, respect, and an unwavering commitment to completing what he started. From a six-year-old Little League player to a senior running back chasing championship history, his journey serves as a reminder that greatness is not defined solely by how an athlete begins. Sometimes, it is defined by the determination to finish.
